Back by popular demand, the 2026 Spooky Awards promise to conjure even more excitement, recognizing the freshest and most frightfully fun products of the season. The competition is open to all Halloween product manufacturers, HCA members, and non-members alike.

 “The Spooky Awards were created to celebrate the incredible creativity and innovation that make the Halloween industry so unique,” said Michele Boylstein, Executive Director of the Halloween & Costume Association. “Each year we are inspired by the imagination, craftsmanship, and passion behind the products submitted, and we look forward to recognizing the best of the best once again in 2026.”

Since its launch, the Spooky Awards have become a respected platform for recognizing innovation, creativity, and product excellence across the Halloween industry.

Submissions officially open today and will be accepted through July 27, 2026. Early submission is encouraged. HCA members receive one complimentary entry, with additional submissions available at a discounted rate. Non-members are also welcome to participate for a fee. Entries will be judged by a panel of industry experts based on Innovation, Marketability, Trendsetting Potential, Appeal, and Usefulness.

Finalists will be announced on or around September 25, 2026, and will receive the official HCA Spooky Awards Finalist logo for use in marketing, packaging, and promotional materials. Winners will be revealed live during the 2027 Halloween & Party Expo in New Orleans, where the industry's leading manufacturers, retailers, buyers, and media gather to celebrate innovation and discover what's next in Halloween.

What:
The Halloween & Costume Association (HCA) has officially opened fan voting for the 2025
Spooky Awards.

The Spooky Awards are the industry’s annual celebration of the best in costumes,
makeup/FX, décor, props, and accessories. They recognize creativity and innovation across
the Halloween and costume industry while engaging fans and professionals alike.

For the first time, fans will decide the “Fang Favorite” winner across multiple categories,
bringing community voices directly into the awards.

Voting runs October 2–15, 2025. Category winners will be revealed October 16, 2025.

Following a wave of outstanding submissions from manufacturers and creators across the globe, the 2025 Spooky Awards Finalists represent the very best in costumes, accessories, décor, makeup, masks, and more. Each entry was evaluated by a panel of industry experts on Innovation, Marketability, Trendsetting Potential, Appeal, and Usefulness.

“The creativity and innovation showcased in this year’s entries are nothing short of extraordinary,” said Michele Boylstein, HCA’s Executive Director. “These Finalists not only capture the essence of Halloween but also set the trends that will shape the season for years to come.”

Winners will be revealed live during the 2026 Halloween & Party Expo in Las Vegas, the premier trade industry event bringing together leading Halloween retailers, manufacturers, and trendsetters.

But wait—new this year! The Spooky Awards introduce a brand-new Fan Vote(launching tomorrow), giving everyone the chance to select their own favorites to be crowned the Fang Favorite. Finalists per category will be revealed on October 16. The ultimate Fang Favorite winner will be announced on January 13, 2026, at the Halloween & Party Expo.

Key findings include:

• 51% of adults who celebrate Halloween plan to dress in costume this year, with
  32% dressing their pets in costume.
• 46% of adults Halloween costume wearers plan to throw or attend a Halloween
  party, while 54% plan to decorate their homes or yards.
• Halloween shopping starts early: 45% of these adults who dress up begin
  purchasing costumes in September, and 36% shop during the first two weeks of
  October.

Spending trends:

• These fun loving Adults plan to spend an average of $60.30 on costumes, $55.56 on decorations, and $39.35 on candy, reflecting the continued enthusiasm for dressing up and creating festive experiences.
• Specialty Halloween/costume stores remain popular, with 46% of these adults planning to shop there, while 40% shop online.
• Since 2020, the percentage of adults celebrating Halloween has increased steadily, showing a resurgence and growing popularity post-COVID.

Demographic insights:

• Generational participation: Millennials (39.5%) and Gen Z (26.7%) are most
  likely to dress in costumes.
• Household composition: Adults in households with children under 18 show
  high engagement, with over 36% planning to take children trick-or-treating.
• Income distribution: Adults across income levels participate, with those in
  households earning $50,000–$99,999 representing the largest share of costume
  wearers.

HCA’s analysis of data from Prosper and the National Retail Federation (NRF) shows
what an interesting group of humans these adults (who dress in costumes) are in their
day-to-day life, not just on Halloween. As a group they are more likely to be open to
new experiences, more extraverted and enthusiastic, are more confident in the
economy and are more likely to be impulsive with a “Live for Today” mindset.

“This data shows that Halloween is a holiday that brings out the creativity and
community spirit of adults, not just children,” said Michele Boylstein, HCA’s Executive
Director. “From dressing up and decorating to attending parties and celebrating with
pets, adults are embracing every aspect of Halloween. The steady increase in
participation since 2020 shows that Halloween is stronger than ever.”

MT LAUREL, NJ (April 17, 2025) - U.S. costume and toy companies are sounding the alarm that newly proposed tariffs on Chinese imports could wipe out Halloween and severely disrupt Christmas unless urgent action is taken. With production already underway and orders locked in, businesses are scrambling to find ways to get products into stores on time and at prices that families can afford.

But affordability is slipping fast. Costumes that used to retail for $19.99 will jump to $39.99. Even simple masks, once priced at $4.99, could now cost $9.99, or more. At double the price, many simply won't buy.

“This is an existential moment for our industry,” said Robert Berman, Halloween & Costume Association Board Member and President of Rasta Imposta/Imposta Costumes, a leading U.S. costume manufacturer. “Halloween isn’t like other holidays. If products don’t land on time or become too expensive for families, Halloween simply doesn’t happen. There is no backup plan.”

The latest round of tariff hikes, which could increase rates up to 145% or even 170%, is hitting seasonal suppliers at the worst possible time. With millions of dollars already spent on raw materials and production, many companies are now facing sudden, unexpected costs that make their ranges unviable. Retailers are reacting by cancelling orders and cutting volumes—even on products specifically designed for their shelves.

“It’s brutal,” said Berman. “These are goods that are weeks from shipping — not months. And because Halloween is a one-night event, if you miss that window, there’s no way to recover.”

The Risk to Christmas

Toy companies are sounding the alarm too, warning that Christmas could be next. “You can’t move a supply chain overnight,” said one industry executive. We’re already seeing retailers freeze decisions on key holiday lines. If nothing changes, American families will face higher prices, fewer choices, and a lot of empty shelves.

Over-Reliance on China Already Being Addressed — But It Takes Time

The costume and toy sectors have been actively working to diversify production for years — but they warn that shifting away from China is a long-term project, not a quick fix.

“We’ve been trying to reduce reliance on China for a while now,” said Berman. “But these are complex supply chains built over decades. You can’t just flip a switch and move thousands of SKUs overnight. Setting up new factories, building trust, ensuring quality, finding capacity — that takes years, not months.”

A Call for Common Sense

Industry leaders are calling on the U.S. government to consider the seasonal nature of these categories before final decisions are made. While they understand the political backdrop, they say the unintended consequences could devastate businesses — especially small- and mid-sized ones — and leave consumers footing the bill.

“We're not asking for handouts,” Berman added. “We’re asking for time, clarity, and a practical path forward. If these tariffs go through as planned, Halloween 2025 could be the one that never happened — and Christmas might not be far behind.”
